Q, Music can always take me out of myself, out of my worries. Just for a time I am nowhere. How can it do this?
A. When you listen to music, are you listening to notes?
In fact you are not listening to, giving your attention to notes, but to the ‘weave’ the whole pattern which is the unified background. You are responding to the unity and it gives delight or pleasure according to what perception you bring to it. A musician discerns a complex unified pattern and is delighted by detail, whereas another person may be moved emotionally by the wash of sound without discerning the structure. In both cases, the music is in your mind. That is where perception, listening is taking place.
It allows music to have infinite potentiality to lead into the unified background, and deepen perception. From the audible background of the unified ‘weave’ of notes and silence, it is possible to go further into the unity which is beyond audible sound. Into the silence itself, which is not empty, but full of reverse resonances, ie. the seeds of the sounds which emerged into the music.
It is a very potent silence. It is the field of potency, the quantum field, the plenum, the end of all seeking. As with music, so with all the Arts, taken beyond their conditioned expressions into the unity behind. Also with meditation, howsoever it is set up, the aim is the same.
From that Field, activity arises.
